Michael Jordan announces Michigan football will join Jordan Brand

According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Michigan Wolverine Football will be the first football team to rock Jordan Brand’s famous Jumpman logo as a team’s official endorser. The nitty gritty of the financial deal is something we previously touched on, noting Michigan’s deal is the richest apparel contract in college sports among public institutions.

While Michigan has struggled in recent years and fallen behind blue-chip programs such as Ohio State and Alabama on the field, there is plenty of momentum and energy building within the program.

Jordan is famously a North Carolina alum and graduate but, obviously, the landmark contract announced by Nike and U-M a few weeks ago, which could reach up to 9 million, is business.

Nike is already everywhere in college football and the Nike swoosh is as iconic as any apparel logo in the game.

The news may seem surprising at first blush because, well, Jordan Brand is primarily known as a basketball brand, not a football one. It caused a big enough stir when it was announced Michigan would switch from adidas to Nike, but now being the only program to wear the Jordan brand has also created commotion. Perhaps UNC will be the second?
