Dipa got the nod of the 12-member committee, which met in Delhi on Thursday, on the basis of her stupendous performance in Rio although the deadline for sending in the recommendation to the Sports Ministry was already over.
Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari (2000, Sydney), boxer MC Mary Kom (2012, London) and shuttler Saina Nehwal (2012, London) were the only other women players from India to have won a medal at the Olympics.
“Sakshi Malik will inspire several sportspersons in the years to come”, he said in an another tweet.
Besides, her coach Mandeep Singh of the Sports Department, who has been coaching her for the last six years, would also be honoured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted “Sakshi Malik creates history!” She will clash with Maria Prevolaraki of Greece in the Round-of-16. However, the Haryanvi wrestler opened her account in the second period of the bronze medal bout by pushing Tynybekova out of the mat and reduced the deficit to just one point from five.
Rohtak: Among the endless stream of visitors at Olympic victor Sakshi Malik’s bungalow in the city’s Sector 4, there was one gent who perhaps personified the Haryana stereotype – out of place with everything else in the house. “Meri 12 saal ki tapasya rang laayi (My 12 years of hard work has borne fruit)”, Sakshi said as tears of joy streamed down her cheeks.
However, this didn’t hold the Haryana wrestler back, as she fought back to emerge victorious. It was a woman who made India look good with its first medal!
She told ANI that there was absolutely no negativity during any of her bouts, even when she was down and seemingly out.
Sakshi Malik for sure the most celebrated athlete of the whole nation today. His intention was to gift wrestler Sakshi Malik, who won India’s first medal, a bronze, at Rio 2016, a Thar SUV and wanted to know what people on Twitter thought about it.
