Jim Furyk celebrates after final round of the Travelers Championship

While he was the first player in PGA Tour history to card a 58, Furyk’s low round was fourth 58 ever shot in tournament-golf history.

Furyk, whose swing was once said to look like “an octopus falling out of a tree”, said: “A million and a half rounds played in the history of the PGA Tour and you look at the great names ahead of me”.

He accomplished that with a birdie on his scorecard, but on Sunday, Furyk was almost ideal.

The 18th hole at TPC River Highland saw some pretty sweet moments on Sunday at the Travelers Championship.

Coincidentally, Furyk had been the most recent player to shoot 59, in the second round of the 2013 BMW Championship.

“Golf is such a hard game, and when you need a par to win a tournament, it’s extremely hard”, Knox said. 13 and 14, then survived a bogey at No. 16 and a wild tee shot and a bunkered approach at No. 18 to par the hole and deny Kelly, who played college golf at the nearby University of Hartford, a chance at a playoff. His finale brought him within four shots of overnight leader Daniel Berger, who had yet to tee off when Furyk completed his record-breaking round. “And then in both situations, I kind of hit a little lull in the middle of the second side”.

“I’m hitting it well, I’m putting it well, it’s trying to find a way to stay out of your own way really”, he said. “And don’t let any thoughts leak in”.

Furyk made a hot start, completing the front nine in eight-under 27 thanks to six birdies, as well as an unlikely eagle at the par-four third, where he holed out from 135 yards.

Furyk reached 11 under with his seventh straight birdie at No. 12.

Furyk fired a 12-under-par 58 to not only set the course record at TPC River Highlands by two shots, but set the tour record by a shot.

Two other professionals have recorded 58s, comprising Germany’s Stephan Jaeger on the Web.com Tour in this year’s Ellie Mae Classic and Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa on the Japan Golf Tour at the 2010 The Crowns. He finished with a 74 to tie with Furyk, Robert Garrigus and Tyrone Van Aswegen at 11 under.

“Rather than mail it in, I went to the range yesterday because I didn’t want to shoot another 72”.

“I felt like the Incredible Hulk when it went in”, said Knox, who goes 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds.

Furyk said he realised he could accomplish something historic when he was still on the front nine. “But, this is about the best I’ve played of any year too”.

The win ensures Knox joins World No. 1 Jason Day, US Open victor Dustin Johnson along with Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott as a double victor on this year’s 2015/16 PGA Tour wraparound schedule following his success in November’s WGC HSBC Champions event.

Seong won her second straight U.S. Girls’ Junior title last month at Ridgewood in New Jersey. The ceremony will be aired live from 7 to 8 p.m. ET on the Golf Channel as part of a “Golf Central” special.
