The district police registered a case of assault leading to murder and rioting under the Indian Penal Code against the vigilantes at the Brahmavar police station. The men knew Mr Poojari well and often visited his chicken-selling shop, the police said. He also owned a commercial vehicle that he used for transporting animals. He was transporting the male calves for a man named Ramesh.
The victim, Prashant Poojary, was traveling with a friend, Akshay Devadiga, when they were attacked by members of a right-wing group named the Hindu Jagrana Vedike.
They allegedly assaulted the three with wooden sticks and rods.
However, they were nabbed and beaten up by the crowd which had gathered on the spot before being handed over to the police along with their vehicle.
He said Devadiga was injured but is out of danger. However, on realising that the situation was getting out of hand, they left the place. Udupi Superintendent of Police KP Balakrishna also confirmed the report of the incident and said that 17 people have been detained in this regard.
Karnataka/Nagpur: A man who was transporting cows in a three-wheeler has died after he was attacked brutally Wednesday night.
According to police Poojary was taking the cows to his village in Udupi district of Karnataka state, India.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had come down hard on cow vigilantes during a “townhall” interaction in Delhi. The administration has failed to curb illegal cattle slaughter.

Condemning the incident, Sharan Pumpwell, state convenor of Bajrang Dal, said the incident was unfortunate. In Mangaluru, the only one is at Kudroli and there are over 1,000 beef stalls in the region.
