Netherlands, Britain in women’s hockey final at Olympics

The Black Sticks made an excellent start to the bronze-medal match, looking to copy the approach that won Argentina the gold in the men’s tournament by aiming for penalty corners early. She says the world No.3 Germans will provide a tough test, still smarting from their 4-3 penalty shootout semifinal loss to the Netherlands.

Britain came out strong in the second quarter and took the lead when Danson picked up the rebound from Whitelock after a penalty corner and found the net in the 21st minute. If you look at some of the other nations that will have a lot of retirements, I think we’ll just be on the upward trend.

In the bronze medal match that faces off at 11 a.m. ET, it will be Germany taking on New Zealand in what should be an absolutely fantastic match.

And the destination of the gold medal was determined by a penalty shootout.

Two more Dutch penalty corners followed and Paumen stroked in from the second of them.

But there’s one team that’s really inspiring us; not just with their commitment to fitness but their attitude to life both on and off the field.

“I’m incredibly proud of the character they’ve shown and they played to the letter of what we set our and they coped incredibly with the pressure”.

It was a point echoed by a happy Danny Kerry, Great Britain’s coach.

He said: “That makes us the most successful GB women’s team ever at an Olympics”.

The one-woman track team from Russian Federation is out of medal contention at the Rio Olympics.

“I believe we have the best tacticians in the world on our management staff and we have very intelligent players who are able to put that on to the field”.

“I would really love to go out with a bang and stand on top of that podium and sing the national anthem and be one of those people”.

Then Helen Richardson-Walsh put GB ahead with a penalty after Sophie Bray was impeded – the Netherlands missing their next one-one-one.

It took until the eighth minute of the final quarter before Spain got a goal past Maddie “Mad Dog” Hinch, GB’s fearless goalie.

The Black Sticks will need a fast change in fortunes after being outclassed by Great Britain 3-0 in the semifinal. Despite having had the honour of representing her country more than 130 times in worldwide competition, López de Eguilaz says it is her dream to win the lottery so she can become a writer instead of having 11 angry women pelt rock-hard balls in her face.

It was a relatively subdued day for New Zealand athletes at the Rio Olympics today. She tied it up at two goals each heading into halftime.

“There are a number of us who have learnt from some heavy defeats over the last few years”.

“On Wednesday, we can’t go in with psychological emotion in the game”.

“But they worry and hate playing us because they know we are gritty and feisty”.
