The East Oregonian reports (http://goo.gl/8u6yiS ) that the survivor was able to give police an account of what happened, but Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston did not immediately release further details.
Two high school wrestling coaches and an OR 14-year-old were found dead from gunshot wounds in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide. Jason Huston, 45, was also found dead in the same home, after apparently shooting Valdez and then himself, Chief Jason Edmiston said by telephone.
Police are searching for “missing and endangered” 14-year-old James “JJ” Hurtado, who police say is related to one of the parties involved. Huston, he said, was a “father-like figure” to the boy.
“The school has been a wrestling powerhouse for the past decade and Valdez and Huston wrestled for the school’s team when they attended”, said Fox, quoting the school spokeswoman as saying: “These gentlemen grew up in the wrestling program, so they’ve been in the community for a long time”. In turn, Huston kidnapped the woman’s 14 year old son and murdered him earlier that day before returning to Valdez’s home to murder the new lovers.
However, police say the motive is not yet clear, said The Associated Press. In December of 2009, he was arrested on charges of menacing and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Hermiston School District administrators said they are planning on having counselors available Friday at Hermiston High School for students who may need assistance.
The two men were both volunteer assistant coaches at the local high school. The menacing charge was dropped and he was sentenced to a year’s probation and community service after pleading no contest to the gun charge.
Hurtado was an incoming freshman at Hermiston High School and student athlete.
