Cubs put starter Lackey, reliever Rondon on disabled list

As for Rondon, the reliever had been dealing with a triceps issue that kept him out of action for almost two weeks, but he came back in recent days for several appearances.

The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher John Lackey on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 15) with a right shoulder strain and right-handed pitcher Hector Rondon on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 17) with a right triceps strain.

The club says neither suffered a setback. An MRI confirmed that he has a right shoulder strain, the Tribune’s Mark Gonzales reported Friday.

The other pitcher coming up is Felix Pena, a reliever that has struck out 81 batters in 63 1/3 innings of work thus far this season.

The Cubs made room on the 40-man roster by transferring injured pitchers Dallas Beeler and Aaron Brooks to the 60-day DL.

The Cubs can cover that start by moving Jake Arrieta up from Wednesday to pitch on his normal fifth-day schedule.

Rondon missed a week because of soreness before returning last weekend with mixed results. He began the season by making nine starts with Tennessee (3-2, 4.28) before earning his first promotion to Iowa on May 24 and going 7-3 with a 4.33 ERA in 15 Triple-A appearances (14 starts).

Rondon, whose fastball reaches 97 miles per hour, was one of the top closers in the league until moving to the setup role when the Cubs acquired Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in a trade last month.

Rob Zastryzny, who grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and played with the Missouri baseball team from 2011-2013 will join the Chicago Cubs in Denver for the team’s three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. Neither injury sounds serious; hopefully, this just gives both of these pitchers time to rest.
