NASA astronauts installing equipment on International Space Station
Jeff Williams speak during an interview aboard the International Space Station last month.

They were about to tackle some extra chores, but a problem cropped up with the right earpiece in Williams’ helmet and he had trouble hearing. The longest EVA to date was done by STS- 102 crew members Susan J. Helms and James S. Voss in 2001 and lasted eight hours and fifty-six minutes. While he could still hear flight controllers with one ear, flight controllers chose to go ahead and end the spacewalk. A much bigger leak, from the suit’s cooling system, nearly led to a spacewalker’s drowning in 2013.
The last time NASA astronauts headed to orbit from the US was the final shuttle flight in 2011.
The capsules created to fit the dock aren’t finished yet.
Friday’s success paved the way for these future spaceships.
Russian Federation is now committed to partnering with the US for the ISS program through 2024.
“Plans to reduce the crew stem from the fact that fewer cargo ships are being sent to the ISS and from the necessity to boost the efficiency of the program”, the newspaper quoted Krikalev as saying. Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency will also be on hand to provide assistance, staying inside the ISS to manage a control panel that will help the astronauts in their task.
The installation of the IDA means the space station will be able to accommodate various space taxis, including SpaceX and Boeing vehicles. Another one – cobbled together from spare parts – should fly up in about a year. This will be his fourth spacewalk and Flight Engineer Rubins’ first. Typically, three Russian cosmonauts live on board the ISS at any given time, but Roscosmos, the country’s state-run space corporation, is thinking about reducing its ISS crew complement to just two cosmonauts.
Williams will have 534 days in space by the time he wraps up his stint at the ISS and returns to Earth in early September. On Friday, the astronauts will start early to install the IDA.
A newcomer to spacewalking, Rubins is only the 11th American woman to conduct a spacewalk and the 12th in the world.

PMA-2 was used by nearly all Space Shuttle missions to the ISS. With the nearing end of Russia’s monopoly ticket to bring people to space, NASA wants to build their future partners a parking spot. The funding for the space station will not be extended beyond 2024 because NASA will leave low-Earth orbit to go to the moon, Mars and far, far away galaxies. SpaceX and Boeing have benefited hugely from the scheme, receiving more than $3 billion in NASA funding for the development of astronaut transport systems. They have travelled to the space station in sets of three aboard the Russian Soyuz shuttle since 2011, when NASA retired its own shuttle program and began paying Russia $60 million per person. We’re getting ready for flight tests.
