Nine Australian Olympians have been detained by police in Rio following allegations they tampered with their accreditation.
AOC chief executive Fiona de Jong told reporters outside the police station that the athletes did not have the correct accreditation to be at the venue but denied earlier reports they had been arrested.
It is not yet known how long the athletes will be detained, though it is clear they expect to be there for some time yet with AOC officials delivering a shipment of water to the athletes.
Among the athletes was Rugby Sevens captain Ed Jenkins and cyclist Matthew Glaetzer.
If the International Olympic Committee decides to revoke the accreditations, the athletes would face immediate deportation.
“If you tamper with accreditations it is their problem”.
The athletes were at the Boomers-Serbia semi-final.
Australian Olympic media boss Mike Tancred confirmed that Australian athletes were being questioned by police.
He did not say in what way the athletes had attempted to alter their accreditation.

“The Brazil authorities and our officials are working through issues”, she said.
