“It’s a great idea, London claims to be a 24-hour city, and this means it really is”.

At least 10 police officers were spotted around night tube platforms in London Kings Cross as late night commuters made their way along the new service.

The service will not only be beneficial to locals enjoying entertainment events and tourists, but also to late-night workers like nurses and security guards.

The mayor of London has formally hailed the start of Night Tube, helping get Londoners around more quickly, safely and affordably.

The mayor’s predecessor, Boris Johnson, announced in September 2014 that the service would begin on September 12 2015, with TfL promoting the benefits for spectators attending games at last year’s Rugby World Cup.

Mr Khan said the now Foreign Secretary “gave up” on the all-night Tube before leaving City Hall in May.

Barnardo’s has been training night workers, including TfL staff, for “more active roles” to protect youngsters from exploitation and abuse at night.

A spokeswoman for TfL commented: “We do not anticipate any additional charge for cover when the Night Tube starts since insurers have already included it in their pricing, and have not increased premiums for the insurance year commencing 1 July”.

“I’m really pleased that 100 days or so after becoming the mayor we’ve got that right”.

“Many of London’s central commuting zones may have been historically out of reach for renters and hopeful buyers, but the Night Tube opens up new possibilities for many Londoners”.

Tube union RMT pledged to maintain a policy of “extreme vigilance” to ensure the extended service is delivered in a safe and secure manner.

Transport for London said: ‘London is already a 24-hour city, and thanks to the huge investment to modernise the Underground, we are now rolling out a 24-hour Tube to match.

Once the full service is in place, 100 police officers will ride the network.

Roughly 50,000 people are expected to use the Night Tube service each weekend, with the number growing to 200,000 by the Autumn when the service extends to the Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines.
