Sequel to Harry Potter spinoff, ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ coming in 2018

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” was first announced to be in the works back in 2013, merely two years later since the last “Harry Potter” film was released.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set for release on November 18th. It also means principal photography on the sequel will have to start sometime next year. “Even in 2012, our team had successfully produced The Casual Vacancy, which was J.K. Rowling’s first post-Potter novel; and subsequently, had also produced India’s record setting hardback Sachin Tendulkar’s Playing It My Way”.

However, Newt mistakenly unleashes a briefcase full of fantastical creatures and must find a way to catch them all while concealing the magical world’s existence from muggles.

The play, penned by Rowling, writer Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, is set 19 years after the seventh and final book in the boy wizard series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince sold 6.9 in the same timeframe.

The latest installment in the “Harry Potter” series is not a novel, but a book version of the script used by the cast and crew of a play now running in London’s West End.

At 12:01 a.m. ET on July 31, Scholastic released the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two script book (ISBN 978-1-338-09913-3; All Ages), in print in the US and Canada.

According to requests, the still unnamed sequel of “Fantastic Beasts” and Where to Find Them will be written by J.K. Rowling and will be directed by David Yates.

The second entry will supposedly “move deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and the story’s other heroes have to decide on their allegiances”. Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen will serve as executive producers.
