Despite losing an opportunity to win gold in Rio de Janerio, PV Sindhu, on 19 August, scripted history by becoming the first shuttler to hand India an Olympic silver medal. “We are happy and I wanted her to also feel the same way”. “They helped me a lot and were incredible”. I never thought I would make it here, but it’s been a wonderful week for me overall. President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal were among the first to post their messages on her big win. Sindhu went on to win several titled in the under-10 and under-13 category.
It was Marin nearly all the way in the match, barring the later stages of the first game, when Sindhu came from behind at 12-16 to first come up on level and then reel off five points in a row to win at 21-16. “Indian Badminton fraternity is very lucky to have a coach and mentor like him”, he added.
Sindhu, coached by the same man who took Nehwal to her London medal, was under huge pressure from the nation of a billion people to end India’s agonising wait for a Rio champion.
“I feel it would change a lot from now onwards”. “What more can I say”, he lamented.
While talking about the reasons that led to Sindhu’s defeat, Gopichand said, “I think it was the initial stage of second game where she lost the game little bit”. He believes in the “mantra” that one needs to train hard, be tough on themselves and persevere day in and day out. He’s been in court all throughout. He also plans to open more including one in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Right now, PV Sindhu is standing tall and strong in her way to the winning place.
“I m a little Spaniard that broke the Asian world”.
Under the new sports policy announced by the state government early this year, a gold medalist at Olympics is entitled for cash prize of Rs 2 crore, while a silver medal victor gets Rs 1 crore.
Here’s a journey of her from the first match to the present.. “She has made the country proud”, a sober Gopichand told reporters here.
