McCann, Drew homer, Yankees break 5-game skid, beat Indians

WP: Danny Salazar (10-6). New York ranks in the top five at third with 150.

Between Mark Teixeira’s second inning home run on Friday and Drew’s sixth-inning home run on Tuesday, the Yankees went 31 consecutive innings without a run. “I got a good pitch to hit and put a decent swing on it”. He’s also now allowed at least one home run in 13 of his last 15 starts and multiple home runs in four of his last six starts. His ERA is down to 3.26. Sabathia, who pitched for Cleveland from 2001-2008, is the all-time leader at Progressive Field with 51 wins and 702 strikeouts. Sabathia’s record is now 4-9 with a 5.23 ERA.

Sabathia was a star of the game when the Yankees signed him in 2009 to an 8-year contract (nine, with the vesting option).

Don’t ask Bauer about his trouble with locating his pitches. And Sabathia has been, and will be, mediocre for the final four/five years of that huge contract. The Yankees are an aging team.

-RHP Jeff Manship is quietly having an outstanding year out of the bullpen since being called up from Triple-A Columbus on June 18. Making matters worse, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner, both about to turn 32, are slowing down and slumping.

While scouts were shocked at the wilting Yankees lineup Tuesday night, they were impressed with Luis Severino.

The Yankees will try to avoid being swept for the second straight series on Thursday, sending Nathan Eovaldi (11-2) to the mound against Trevor Bauer (9-8). He received a no-decision despite allowing one run in six innings. That would be the only Yankee run on the night.

For additional team radio station affiliates: Yankees and Indians.

In the first inning, after Gardner struck out and Headley walked, José Ramirez and Francisco Lindor doubled up ARod with impressive range, footwork and quick hands.

The home run was McCann’s 20th of the season and second in as many nights. “I just didn’t get it done”. If you miss, can it be a single?

“It’s almost like he hit it the ideal amount, it just fell in there”, Miller said. The Indians loaded the bases with two out, bringing up Abraham Almonte to face Yankees All-Star reliever Dellin Betances. “Two of their hits were a squibber and a jam shot. It’s going to make for a great series”. Talk about depth at the catcher position. Carlos Santana and Jerry Sands led off the sixth with two-straight singles.

Honest Abe Almonte then hit Sabathia’s 102nd pitch into center field for a single to break the tie. Perez struck out and Aviles grounded out to end the inning, though it was enough to give Salazar the lead.

Once again, this would have been an interesting game to watch with strike-zone technology.

Sleep on this one, and next time, you’ll really be paying for the autograph of unproven prospect.

The top of the seventh was Salazar’s finest hour.

The burden is on the shoulders of the Yankees’ cast of veteran hitters who are struggling mightily right now. He got Derek Jeter’s replacement, Didi Gregorius, to pop out.

The Yankees got an insurance run in the eighth off Austin Adams to push the lead to 8-5. SV: Cody Allen (23). He started the ninth by striking out Teixeira.

Seeing young talent come into New York and perform well is a definite plus to a veteran team who could use more youth on the roster.
