Louisiana flooding: President Obama to visit Baton Rouge next week

Donald Trump was more presidential than President Barack Obama in going to the flooded areas in Louisiana Friday, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said.

“Honestly, Obama ought to get off the golf course and get down there”, Mr Trump said at a campaign rally later in the day in MI, alluding to the President’s Wednesday golf game.

“Somebody is, somebody is that shouldn’t be”, Trump replied.

That made the president look like a hypocrite.

The White House said Friday afternoon that Obama would travel to Louisiana on Tuesday.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said Thursday that he’d just as soon Obama wait a while to visit due to the amount of resources he said it would take from the recovery effort.

“I’m not complaining in any way about our federal partnership”, Edwards said in a news conference Thursday. His campaign has been dominated by outrageous comments, insults and controversies, but on Friday he visited with residents and volunteers, signed hats and briefly helped unload a truck of supplies for disaster victims. Entire neighborhoods must now contend with flood-hit homes. A ruined couch, chair and bedroom furniture were heaped on the lawn.

Trump is living up to his words in North Carolina the other night: “We are one nation”.

“T$3 he vice president was here about three weeks ago to go to a memorial service for the victims of the police officers that were killed here, and I will tell you it’s a major ordeal”, Edwards continued. “It’s going to be so attractive”.

The first stop was a Baptist Church in a heavily-damaged portion of East Baton Rouge Parish, where Trump met the Rev. Franklin Graham; Tony Perkins, president of the conservative Family Research Council, whose own home was flooded; and a group of volunteers cooking meals and helping the elderly gut their homes.

Obama’s vacation is due to end on Sunday.

Edwards said he had not been informed of Trump’s visit and hoped the candidate was in not in town exclusively “for a photo-op”.

“We’re talking about an very bad lot of people, which is why we are trying to turn on the assistance as soon as possible”, Edwards said at a news conference on Friday afternoon, offering details on temporary housing.

“It’s also presidential today to have him and Governor Pence going to Louisiana in a decidedly nonpolitical event”, she told ABC’s Good Morning America Friday”, adding that they would be “going to help people on the ground who are in need”. She said “my heart breaks for Louisiana” and urged people to donate to the relief effort.
