Tom Daley’s quest for a second medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio got off to a spectacular start on Friday (19 August).

Daley was pressed throughout the prelim, however, by China’s two competitors.

Daley finished ahead of China’s Qiu Bo, who was silver medallist in 2012.

Tom Daley has made a shock early exit from the Rio Olympics 10m platform diving, as he failed to make the finals, after winning in the preliminary heat. He will need to do so, he suggested, if he is to have a shot at gold on Saturday. “But now it’s about making sure I am consistent through the semi-finals and the finals”.

His final score of 571.85 was reached after he earned 103.60 points for his 4½ somersaults in the competition’s fourth round, as reported USA Today.

The divers will be back at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center Saturday morning for the semifinal at 10am ET. Still, with a bronze for 10-meter synchronized diving this year, and a bronze from the 10-meter platform in London, he has a great shot to medal.

One of the rare few LGBTI athletes, Daley is set to marry his screenwriter partner, Dustin Lance Black and openly professes that he is gay.
