Maryland’s jobless rate has fallen significantly from July 2015, when it was 5.1 percent, to hold steady at “a pretty low unemployment rate”, said Ann Macheras, an economist and vice president of the regional group for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

In a separate federal survey of business establishments that excludes jobs in agriculture and people who are self-employed, Kentucky’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment decreased by 700 jobs in July from the month before but was up 19,400 positions since July 2015. And it was just 5.4 percent the month before that. The year-ago figure was 2.9 percent.

On the national level, the unemployment rate for July was 4.9 percent, the same as the June rate.

That said, younger Americans aren’t working summer jobs quite as often as they used to.

The number of unemployed OH workers fell by 13,000 to 278,000, down from 291,000 in June, according to the jobs report. Construction added 2,200 jobs, making it the fastest-growing industrial sector for the month.

The labor force participation rate was 63.1 percent in OH in July, up from 62.4 percent a year earlier.

South Carolina’s unemployment rate is still higher than the nation as a whole, but the state inched closer to matching it.

“This is another important step forward”, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said of Thursday’s report.

The state’s labor force rose by about 13,000 individuals in July to just under 4.9 million, the department said, with it having increased by almost 98,000 since early January.

So why is the jobless rate still rising? “Employers are reluctant to lay people off”. The private service-providing sector, at 3,820,600, added 8,000 jobs.

Goods-producing industries, at 903,700, lost 1,300 jobs over the month, according to the numbers released by JFS.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised seasonally adjusted preliminary total nonfarm job estimates for June down by 2,100 jobs, from 1,403,400 to 1,401,300. Domestically, the rate of inflation has been far below than the Fed’s target of two percent, while recent retail sales data showed a weakening trend in consumer spending. Our industry-led initiative EARN Maryland, is responsible for more than 1,000 Marylanders in jobs.

That’s a substantial 4.5 percent annual decline. Resident employment declined by 18,000 while the unemployment count increased by 3,000.

Only Fresno County, at 9.4 percent, was better.

“Payroll jobs grew”, Condon said in a statement.

He cited the decision of some companies to move corporate headquarters to Arizona as well as some firms relocating operations here.

South Carolina’s still adding jobs, but the state’s economic recovery is showing signs of cooling off.

But Scarpinato is not claiming that things are great.

“My gut feeling is education”, Weaver said.

That, however, still leaves the question of whether much of that can be offset by the cuts to higher education.
