Rhode Island unemployment rate stays at 5.5 percent in July
The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) said the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in July was down 0.1 percent from June and was 0.7 percent lower than a year ago.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits in new applications dropped last week, a trend in line with strengthening job market conditions. The number of people without jobs fell by about 6,200 for a current total of almost 242,000 as well. Jobs numbers come form a survey of employers, a survey that can miss new and growing businesses. At the same time, the number of unemployed residents fell by 6,209 to 242,893, its lowest level since October 2007.
Arkansas’ June unemployment rate was revised from 3.8 percent to 3.9 percent, the report said.
Only Fresno County, at 9.4 percent, was better.
State leaders have emphasized training and education programs, saying employers have jobs available and are in search of talent.
The size of the Kansas civilian labor force shrank by about 7,000 workers over the month and compared with a year ago.
The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.9 percent for July, unchanged from the month before. It’s also worth noting that while summer unemployment for white, Hispanic and Asian youth all dipped slightly past year, the rate for blacks showed essentially no improvement.
“Michigan continues to record gradual jobless rate reductions during 2016”, said Jason Palmer, director of the state’s Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.
Halbert noted that since the start of the recession, the nation has added jobs at an annual rate of 4.4 percent, while OH has average only 1.6 percent annual job growth.
“For the second month in a row, government and manufacturing employment increased”, he said.
The New Haven area labor market added 200 jobs, compared to gains of 1,900 in the Hartford area labor market and 700 in Fairfield County.
Financial activities and professional and Business services had the biggest drop at 1,600. Analysts expected jobless claims to decline by 1,000 to 265,000 last week. Over the year, Trade, Transportation and Utilities added 3,000 (+0.5%) jobs. Construction saw a loss of 3,600 and mining and logging lost 300 jobs. Other services were up 294.
“About 100 of those were farm jobs and 500 were nonfarm jobs”.
Over the past 12 months, the county gained 76,000 payroll jobs for a gain of 1.8 percent.
Private education and health services, for example, lost 2,200 jobs.

“The 43 consecutive months, in which Ohio’s job growth was below the national average, has ended”, said George Zeller of Cleveland, an economic research analyst. Manufacturers were more upbeat about business prospects and capital spending in the next six months.
