One volunteer has been volunteering with the red cross for four years and decided after retirement, it was the right thing to do with his free time.
The Red Cross says it’s housing more than 7,000 people in shelters across Louisiana. “This morning I was watching it on the television and I thought, I can help”.
Disastrous floods have been wreaking havoc over Louisiana since last week.
“I think the leadership I received in the Marine Corps and the deployment and living out of a suitcase and a backpack helps out a lot”, Ward said.
“Right when I walked in the shelter, it nearly felt like a punch in the gut”.
Heisler says, “That’s really the first step during this response”.
“One is going to be a logistics warehouse manager, two are going to be shelter supervisors one is going to be a shelter work and the other is going to work in bulk distribution”, said Deskins. “At this point we’re starting to see some of our shelter population go down, not too fast, but people are able to start to return to their homes but they don’t have much to return to”.
“We’re always looking for volunteer support, especially here in Midland”, said Alex Villa, Regional Chief Operating Officer.
That’s because it takes weeks to train new volunteers.
The Red Cross is in need of donations to help with the disaster relief operation.
“They don’t have any of their medication, they may have had other medical devices at their homes, oxygen, you never know. They’re kind of in shock”.
Bob Simmons, who lives in Simpsonville, is working in a shelter in Walker, Louisiana as part of the Red Cross response to the deadly and devastating flooding in the state.
