Gold medallist Justin Rose has said that the players who skipped golf’s return to the Olympics this year “missed out” and that he expects more of them to feature at the Tokyo Games in 2020.
“That felt better than anything I’ve ever won”, said Rose, 2013 US Open champion.
Justin Rose of Great Britain became the first golfer to claim Olympic gold in a century while Henrik Stenson of Sweden, the victor of this year’s The Open Championship, took home silver.
One was Tiger Woods who tweeted shortly after Justin Rose (who he shares an agent with) won the gold medal that everyone in Rio was a victor. “As long as he signed the scorecard the right way, he was going to get a medal”.
Rose was supposed to take his son to watch Chelsea play West Ham in the English Premiership tonight.
“Anybody making the decision going forward, I would just ask them, were you in Rio on Sunday?” “He’s just beginning to understand what sport is all about”.
Rose fought back tears as he explained that Leo brought home a medal of his own from a soccer camp this week and was quick to lay down a challenge.
“I was disappointed to not earn any medal”, said An. Now it’s time for you to get yours.’ He was actually crying when I phoned him.
“It has resonated with a wider audience, far wider than the US Open victory did. That was very, very special”.
In Brazil, a country not known for its love of golf, a large and enthusiastic gallery followed the leading players around the course, cheering their tee shots and groaning when their putts went awry.
“I think every tournament is very special, ” Ko said Monday during a news conference. “I think it’s done golf a great deal of good”.
At this year’s Olympics, in which golf has returned as an official medal event for the first time in 112 years, Korean golfer An Byeong-hun finished tied at 11th after going 3-under 68 during the final round on Sunday for a total of 6-under 278. “Justin was the better player today”.
“For me this is winning a tournament and this is winning a huge tournament”.
A two-under 69 kept Rose in contention, before a stunning 65 in round three put him at the top of the leaderboard ahead of the final day’s play.
The notion that second place is first loser doesn’t apply in the Olympics, and that’s what stood out to Rose. “I learned a lot from the Games”, he said. But it was deeper than just the guys on the podium.
And to think he wasn’t even booked for Rio until a peculiar set of circumstances.
Padraig Harrington referred to them as “sheep” for following each other out of Olympics.
She is a phenomenal golfer in any sense of the word and has shot a blazing trail through the game since she won her first tour event as a 14-year-old in 2012.

Few people play golf in Brazil and the par 71 course was built especially for the Olympics on environmentally sensitive land.
