A man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of arson, officials said, over a wildfire in Northern California that has destroyed more than 175 homes and businesses and forced hundreds of residents to flee.
The community is still reeling from last year’s devastating Valley Fire that killed four people, destroyed more than 1,300 homes and burned through more than 76,000 acres.
So far this year, there have been at least 3,874 wildfires in the state, more than 200 more than had been fought at this point one year ago and 650 more than the five-year average.
A wildfire in northern California destroyed several homes in its path in a residential neighbourhood on Sunday.
The wildfire in San Luis Obispo County, near Lake Nacimiento, about 180 miles northwest of Los Angeles, grew to almost 7 square miles and forced authorities to evacuate some residents by boat when it shifted toward the lake on Sunday. Seth, 18, took his own life previous year. “I really feel for people and think that we can stay and help them”. It is only 5 percent contained. Lake County is a largely rural area of wineries and vacation homes about 120 miles north of San Francisco.
Authorities have traced the Soberanes fire to an illegal campfire left unattended in a state park.
In central California, a wildfire near Lake Nacimiento, about 180 miles northwest of Los Angeles, grew to almost 7 square miles and forced authorities to evacuate some residents by boat when it shifted toward the lake Sunday.
“Every time firefighters would go in to try and attack the blaze”, says Daniel Berlant with CAL Fire, “another home would light on fire”. It grew to almost 7 square miles and forced authorities to evacuate residents by boat when it shifted toward Lake Nacimiento on Sunday. Thousands have been forced to evacuate the area as firefighters struggle to slow the wind-aided wildfire as it feeds on dry, heavy brush. Temperatures reached triple digits in numerous places, stoking an increased risk of wildfires across the mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles counties through at least Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. Most of the 175 structures destroyed were mobile homes and small bungalows.

The cause of the Rocky Fire – which destroyed 43 homes and burned 69,438 acres in Lake, Yolo and Colusa counties in July and August 2015 – was caused by a faulty water heater inside an outbuilding.
