Trevor Siemian to start at QB against 49ers

On the second drive, the defense showed the classic “bend, don’t break” mentality, forcing a punt after giving up a big first down conversion to start the drive.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is running out of time to compete for the starting quarterback spot.

The San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos square off in a Week 2 preseason contest this evening, and I came across some interesting information. Kaepernick threw around 45 passes – including a number of passes of 25 yards. “We could always start faster, but just getting into the flow of the offense kind of playing more this week we see how things kind of work”.

Health scares: Injuries were a trend throughout the game. Linebacker Nick Bellore and rookie wide receiver Bryce Treggs left with knee injuries, and others to exit were Eli Harold (chest), Tony Jerod-Eddie (chest) and Nick Bellore (unknown). DT DeForest Buckner, the first of the 49ers’ two first-round picks, was held out with a lower-body injury. Arik Armstead, Bruce Ellington, DeAndre Smelter and Glenn Dorsey won’t play, either.

After seeming No. 1 signal-caller Mark Sanchez got the nod in last week’s exhibition opener vs. Corey Lemonier, Eli Harold, Ronald Blair and Tank Carradine couldn’t rattle Broncos starter Trevor Siemian, who opened 10-of-11 for 75 yards.

Coach Kubiak named a starting QB for the Broncos second preseason game vs. San Francisco. – Sanchez on his fumbles on consecutive second-quarter possessions. This game was a reminder of that. A third-down incompletion on the first series was followed by a third-down completion short of the first-down marker on the next drive.

Down a touchdown in the third quarter, the Broncos came within a yard of being down two.

Kaepernick did not throw prior to Sunday’s exhibition-opening loss to the Houston Texans.

Though the Broncos couldn’t complete the comeback attempt, two of the highlights were Lynch’s two touchdown passes. Rookie Paxton Lynch has also flashed in limited action. Coaches are really high on Rush’s potential. To win the job, the Broncos want to see him run the offense with some authority, be the boss, get people where they’re supposed to be and continue to flash his upper-tier arm strength to close out some drives.

Mike Davis: Davis lost fumbles on back-to-back touches. Kaepernick didn’t play in the 49ers’ preseason opener either. Oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv have installed host Denver as a 6-point favorite for the 9 p.m. ET bout.

Erik Pears: It looked like 2015 all over again when Pears got beat for a sack. Between Michael Schofield, who was filling in at right guard, and right tackle Donald Stephenson, Anderson rolled into the Niners’ secondary.

Game Preview: For both teams, it is all about the quarterback as each team has a quarterback competition going for the starting position.
