Zika may lead to severe joint deformities in newborns

Florida’s caseload of Zika spread by Miami mosquitoes has risen to 25, and us health officials continue to warn pregnant women to avoid the infection zone despite the governor’s assurances that the area of concern is shrinking.
A baby born in a Harris County hospital has become the first infant to die from Zika in the US and the first Zika-related death in Texas.
In other Zika news, Miami-Dade County’s mosquito control director said efforts to control Aedes aegypti mosquito populations in Miami through aerial spraying are going well, according to the Associated Press. The U.S. FDA has already approved a test program regarding the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in Key Haven.
Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said Wednesday, August 10th there are NO locally transmitted cases of Zika virus in Wisconsin – but there is a plan in place as it relates to prevent and response here in the Badger State.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal state that the pregnant victim does not have any direct connection with anyone from the neighborhood pinpointed as the epicenter of the outbreak in Florida.

There might be a connection between the outbreak of Zika virus in Palm Beach County and the virus being taken into the locality from a recent trip to Miami, where the disease is seeing an explosion.
“I think we’ve got everything we need to do, we’ve got our hospital aware”, said Robinson.
Escambia County Commissioner Grover Robinson says from where he sits, there are greater concerns at this point than a virus that for the most part has remained downstate. Two of the cases in Georgia are pregnant women.
The statement came at the request of Alejandro García Padilla, governor of the US commonwealth, where the Zika virus is spreading rapidly, threatening hundreds of pregnant women and their unborn babies and women of childbearing age.
The Florida Department of Health says Zika has been detected in Bay County. One of those cases was sexually transmitted. Most people only experience mild symptoms.
In total, Florida has reported 461 travel-related Zika cases since early February, 57 of which are in pregnant women.
