Reds lefty Finnegan loses no-hit bid in 7th vs Dodgers

Kershaw is expected to throw 20 to 25 pitches in Saturday’s bullpen session then throw a longer, 40-pitch session when the Dodgers return to Los Angeles Tuesday. Kershaw has been out since June 27 with back pain but will throw a bullpen session before Saturday’s game and hopes to begin a minor league rehab assignment before the end of the month. The return of the three-time Cy Young award victor would provide a much-needed boost for the Dodgers, who fell behind first-place San Francisco by a half game in the National League West after Bud Norris failed to get through the fourth inning of Friday’s 9-2 loss. Finnegan also was the Reds’ starter on April 21 when Jake Arrieta no-hit them at Great American Ball Park.

OUR PICK: The Dodgers are just 2-7 in Anderson’s last nine starts when he pitches the second game of a series and have dropped five of his last six starts overall.

Finnegan doubled and scored on Peraza’s single in the second to give the Reds a 5-0 lead.

The 28-year-old Kershaw is now on the 60-day disabled list but is eligible to return to the mound on August 27.

Votto’s homer gives him seven 20-homer seasons with the Reds, tying him with Adam Dunn and George Foster for fifth on the Reds’ list of players with seasons of 20 or more home runs.

With two runners on and two outs in the fourth, the Dodgers chose to intentionally walk catcher Tucker Barnhart to pitch to Adleman, who was hitless in his career.

“Emotional for all of us”, Reds manager Bryan Price said.

“I tried to deal with it the best I could, but with the humidity and everything out there tonight, it was hard to deal with”, Anderson said of the blister.

Saturday’s game was delayed 1 hour, 19 minutes by heavy rain just before the start of the bottom of the seventh. Coming off only his second 30-start season of his eight-year Major League Baseball career, Anderson hasn’t been able to get on the hill and stay there. He’ll face the Dodgers for the second time in his career. He is 3-4 with a 4.04 ERA in 15 games, including 11 starts, with the Dodgers this season.

Dodgers: LHP Rich Hill, on the disabled list since July 18 with a left middle finger blister, threw 75 pitches in a simulated game on Thursday at the Dodgers’ spring training facility. He was equally dominant Saturday.Finnegan (8-9) did not allow a hit until Adrian Gonzalez singled leading off the seventh. Travolta was shown on the video board dancing to music from his movie, “Saturday Night Fever”, in the middle of the eighth inning.

Sidelined since late June with a herniated disk in his back, three-time Cy Young award victor Clayton Kershaw could join the contending Los Angeles Dodgers sooner rather than later.

Reds: SS Zack Cozart missed his third consecutive start on Saturday as he continues to be plagues by Achilles tendon and patella tendon soreness.

Dodgers: LHP Julio Urias (3-2) is scheduled to make his first start since August 8 in Sunday’s third game of the four-game series. Urias has never faced the Reds.
