Tens of thousands of Yemenis rally to support Houthi-led council

Ambassadors from the G18 group of nations that has backed the peace talks issued a statement condemning “unconstitutional and unilateral actions in Sanaa”, apparently in response to the announcement.

Ambassadors of the group of 18 countries reiterated on Saturday their concern over the actions of Houthi insurgents in Yemen, warning that their moves lead to further divisions and calling on all sides to abide by the efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Thousands of Yemenis on Saturday rallied in Yemeni capital Sana’a in a show of support to a council set up by rebels to rule the war-wracked country.

“Economic affairs will be the priority of our work in the coming period”, he said.

“The hand of peace is still outstretched”, he added.

Yemen has been gripped by civil war since 2015, as the Shia-led Houthi movement and the predominantly Sunni forces loyal to beleaguered President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi fight for power in the country.

In Oman, one of the countries where peace talks were held, Houthi negotiators said that Saudi forces were preventing them from returning to Yemen by blocking worldwide flights to Sanaa’s airport.

Earlier this month, UN-sponsored negotiations between representatives from Hadi’s government and rebels ended in Kuwait without a breakthrough.

The central bank has been considered the last bastion of the impoverished country’s financial system, paying salaries to state employees on both sides of the front lines and guaranteeing food imports as Yemen approaches starvation.
