Detwiler no match for Sale, A’s fall 6-2 to White Sox
Chicago White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana will try to reach double-digit victories for the first time in his career when he takes the mound against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon.

The White Sox were shut out for the ninth time this season and the first time since July 16, at the Angels. Nate Jones brought back visions of Kansas City by giving up a solo shot to Danny Valencia and a one-out single to Ryon Healy, and Sanchez compounded problems by throwing high and wide to Anderson a force attempt at second that was challenged and reversed. This team can turn in an absolutely disastrous performance all week, playing just above the level of Little League, and then they can turn around and do what they did tonight against the White Sox; they destroyed James Shields and hung six earned runs (seven total) on him in 4.2 innings while almost pitching a ideal game on their side of the mound.
Oakland had scored twice in that inning, and there were runners on first and second and two out. A’S starter Ross Detwiler was charged with all six runs on ten hits over four frames to get the loss.
Chris Sale raced out as the majors’ first 14-game victor and was the AL starter in the All-Star game.
Sale helped soothe those tides Saturday by returning to the form that earned him the starting nod in the All-Star Game. The right-hander has surrendered 27 earned runs in 14 innings over his last four starts for the White Sox, who have dropped 10 of 13.
Oakland manager Bob Melvin is making plans to be without reliable shortstop Marcus Semien soon. He reestablished his Cy Young credentials with one of his finest starts of the season, limiting the Athletics to three hits and three walks over eight innings, striking out eight.
The A’s added their eighth run with another two-out rally on back-to-back doubles by Valencia and Vogt, and just for the icing on the cake, scored their ninth in the ninth on a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a Semien single.
Graveman came in having allowed five home runs in his last four starts.
“It’s impressive”, Melvin said.
Third inning: Abreu and Cabrera combine for a pair of doubles to start the inning for one run, and Coats scores Cabrera with a soft grounder for a 5-0 lead. In 11 appearances (six starts) against the A’s, Sale is 4-2 with a 3.04 ERA.
Zach Neal makes his fourth start in Sunday’s series finale replacing the scheduled Jesse Hahn, who will remain on the disabled list. “He’ll have at least another rehab game, but I’m not sure when”, Melvin said.
The A’s could be without designated hitter Billy Butler, who did not play Saturday because of an illness. “He’s getting a lot closer”, manager Robin Ventura said.
White Sox: 2B Tyler Saladino (back) sat out a second straight game. OF Avisail Garcia (knee) is expected to begin a rehab stint in the next few days.
