Volkwagen Recalls 670000 Vehicles For Defective Airbags

Though in the beginning months of 2015, the sector appeared to have been operating smoothly, this morning, the automobile manufacturing industry was shaken up once again after Volkswagen announced that it is recalling almost 420,000 cars in the United States due to a flaw that could prevent airbags from deploying.

Recalls in the U.S. last year exceeded 60 million vehicles, a record the NHTSA said in January could be surpassed this year. The problem is that a spring in the steering wheel assembly can become fouled, ripping a cable that controls the electrical connection to the front air bags. In a crash that warrants a driver front airbag deployment, the airbag will not deploy, leading to a risk of driver injury.

Volkswagen AG said Friday it is recalling 670,000 cars and SUVs in North America for potentially defective air bags. VW says owners will see a warning light for the air bag if the auto is susceptible to the problem.

The world’s biggest vehicle maker said the recall affected its Golf, Passat, Jetta and Tiguan models assembled between 2010 and 2014.
