Paxton Lynch: Kubiak impressed by Lynch’s fast progress

Coach Kubiak named a starting QB for the Broncos second preseason game vs. San Francisco.

He would’ve been better off checking himself out of the game at that point, because he failed to complete his only three passes in the second quarter-one of which was a pick-six on an ill-advised pass to Demaryius Thomas.

This time it was Trevor Siemian, who was impressive on his first drive, but then threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by San Francisco’s Eric Reid. “I knew I could adapt to guard”. On the next play, Brooks clobbered Broncos running back C.J. Anderson.

Denver’s defensive starters – which included Von Miller, but not DeMarcus Ware or Aqib Talib – held the 49ers’ offense to one first down in two possessions. Parts of it will be unpleasant – particularly when it comes time to dissect a second quarter that began with a Trevor Siemian interception and ended with Mark Sanchez’s lost fumbles on two consecutive sacks that ended drives in scoring range. “That’s hard”, Sanchez said after the game. More plays like that third-quarter sack could jeopardize his chances of remaining as the swing tackle.

“I’ll be on the field sooner or later”, Davis said.

“I watched him throw”. There’s no excuse for that, you can’t do that. Whether he succeeds or fails, he is being given a golden opportunity not just to compete for a starting job, but to have it all but handed to him. “That’s really too bad”.

Maybe Kubiak will find something in the details when he looks at it again, but with the second preseason contest now in the books – a 31-24 loss to the 49ers – neither Trevor Siemian nor Mark Sanchez has looked the clear victor. We have to hang on to the good things they do because they are doing some good things. You have to protect the football.

“From what we understand, it’s not a long-term thing”. “That’s what we need to focus on right now more than anything”. The decision makes sense.

Siemian finished his night 10-of-14. Sanchez came in next and went 10-of-17 for 120 yards with two fumbles lost.

One bright spot was the second-half performance of Paxton Lynch who completed 15 of 26 passes for 113 yards, and made the Broncos’ two passing touchdowns to tight end John Phillips and receiver Durron Neal. In the receiving end, Vance McDonald had 54 yards and one touchdown in two receptions while Jerome Simpson added 29 yards in three catches.

On an evening in which any of the Broncos quarterbacks could have made a huge impression and perhaps won a starting job, none of them looked great. “Going into my eighth year, I know better”. Sure, it’s only preseason, but the Colts wanted to see which Luck would show up – the guy who went to Pro Bowls in each of his first three National Football League seasons or the turnover-prone quarterback who couldn’t stay on the field in 2015.
