‘War Dogs’ needs a battle plan

This news story is related to Latest/143415-War-Dogs-drama-humor-Afghan-arms-deal/ – breaking news, latest news, pakistan ne. “I live on crumbs like a rat”, says Diveroli, “and when you’re dealing with the Pentagon you can live on crumbs”. While there are still amusing parts, for the most part WAR DOGS is a straightforward crime drama, with an intriguingly grey sense of morality at its core.

At its base, “War Dogs” is a story about a good guy teaming up with his boisterous and problem-causing friend to do immoral and illegal acts involving guns and the USA government so he can provide for his wife and new child. That’s because rather than being satirical, it’s actually a movie that takes itself fairly seriously.

“War Dogs” is based on the true story of David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who in the 2000s became global arms dealers from the couch of a Miami apartment. With his girlfriend (Ana de Armas) pregnant, he needs money fast, and after reconnecting with an old school chum at a funeral, he goes into business with small-time arms dealer Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) to form what becomes a huge company, AEY (which turns out to be a meaningless acronym). He’s a small-time arms dealer who’s taken advantage of a US government that puts bids for weapons contracts on a public website, meaning anyone can access it and bid. They zip around in matching Porsches living off the “crumbs” that bigger contractors won’t bother to chase, underbidding rivals for relatively modest contracts with the Bush II government to keep ordnance flowing to soldiers Iraq and Afghanistan. When their first contract winds up seized at customs, the two are forced to travel to Jordan and ride with a truckload of Berettas all the way to Baghdad. ‘Look, I was buying and selling weapons to gun nuts on the internet, this is what I’m doing now, but it’s not gun nuts.

I hated the character that Jonah Hill plays, one of his worst to date in my opinion. Hill plays Efraim Diveroli, a morally bankrupt mastermind and irresistible party dude, in a riotous performance.

“Yeah, that happens, that’s always just financial – trying to make those movies for a reasonable price”, he told Cinemablend.

War Dogs opens in New Zealand cinemas on August 18.

But it’s a bark that’s loud and frequently enjoyable.

Efraim has a bigger plan in mind and brings David into the fold.

With the setup out of the way, the rest of War Dogs is an exciting and hilarious romp that takes audiences through the rise and fall of the two protagonists.
