Patriots RB Dion Lewis needs second knee surgery, out indefinitely

Dion Lewis’ injury has been somewhat of a mystery, like most things surrounding the New England Patriots. Recent reports indicate that he now needs to have a second knee surgery.

Lewis tore his ACL back in November after emerging as a dynamic rushing and receiving threat in the Patriots’ up-tempo, short-passing offense.

Vollmer has missed the entire preseason while serving on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and apparently the injury is big enough to sideline the veteran for the full season. Tom Curran of CSN New England said the second surgery doesn’t involve Lewis’ ACL but he’ll have an eight-to-10 week recovery time.

As for Vollmer, he will be a free agent after this season and turns 33 years old next summer.

Tack on Tom Brady missing the start of the seasons with a suspension, and Danny Amendola looking to regain his health, and you have a battered Patriots offense. Starting for the first time in his career in place of a suspended LeGarrette Blount, Lewis recorded 120 yards from scrimmage.

The second-year guard out of Georgia Tech has a broken hand, according to the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride, and the timetable for his return is not yet known. The Eagles largely tried to make him a true running back, giving him 36 carries and just three receptions in two seasons, before the Patriots figured out how to really use him.
