Tory will likely wait until the Parapan Am Games have concluded on Saturday before making his final decision. It was unsuccessful in bidding for the 1996 and 2008 Olympics.

Los Angeles inched closer to begin selected as the U.S. candidate for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. “What I have said is what I am going to do and that is to undertake a careful assessment of this issue in the time that is available to us”. On July 27, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said the city wouldn’t sign an agreement to financially backstop cost overruns associated with the local Olympics bid.

Toronto is fresh off completing the largest Pan Am Games in history and the first global multi-sport event in Toronto since the 1930 Commonwealth Games.

Following the rescinding of Boston’s candidature due to a lack of public support, the USOC has been forced to move quickly to find another potential host with the global Olympic Committee (IOC) having set a September 15 deadline for interested cities to submit a letter of intent.

“I think it is right for this city“. Tory is gathering as much information as he can before committing to bid for the 2024 Summer Games.

The mayor also stressed that his past support for Toronto Olympic bids as a private citizen won’t necessarily translate into him signing off on a bid this time around.

The cost of hosting an Olympics is generally shared between the three levels of government and Tory told reporters that he hopes to reach out to his counterparts at Queen’s Park to gauge their support. That amount will be about $1.5 billion for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.

Tory was briefed on Tuesday about the 2024 Summer Olympics bidding process when he met privately with both the COC president and the chief operating officer.

Should the USOC put Los Angeles forward, the city will have to compete with Rome, Paris, Budapest and Hamburg for the 2024 games.
