And it brought with it gushing praise from the man he may yet surpass four years from now in Tokyo.

“He has been untouchable this week, he has been on a different level”.

“He has dealt with extreme pressure – he is a true champion”.

Meanwhile, Becky James and Katy Marchant both advanced to semi-finals of the sprint.

And now that they’ve got a whopping 10 golds between them (plus a silver) they will be heading home from Rio to get hitched next month.

“It’s character, just fantastic”.

Mr Kenny then woke up to a string of tweets praising the 28-year-old Olympian for his success.

Scott’s triumph comes five years after he was heartbroken to lose out to long-term rival Ainslie as they vied to represent Britain in the London 2012 Olympics.

“At my first Olympics in Beijing I knew we had something special to build on”, said Kenny. “I’d love her to bits even if she was rubbish, but she’s not”.

In Rio, Kenny won three gold medals, and Trott won two. Four gold medals for Laura Trott. Not bad for a woman who says she still feels “like a little girl riding around on her bicycle”.

“The wedding will be next year, hopefully”, Trott said. “Then I thought, how on earth am I going to top that?”

Matthijs Buchli of the Netherlands took silver and Malaysia’s Azizulhasni Awang claimed bronze in a final that had to be restarted twice after issues with the positioning of the riders and the electric bike that sets the pace in the early laps.

There were two re-starts in the keirin final before Kenny won his third gold medal in Rio and the sixth of his career.

British Cycling head coach Iain Dyer said the success was down to the athletes and forward planning.

“Just to clarify, “what’s for tea?” is often I question [sic] asks me! So I think before asking questions of us they may want to ask themselves why they keep getting it wrong”.

Dyer insisted that Kenny should be counted amongst his country’s greatest ever sportsmen.
