Kenny hits a six at the tracks

The 24 year old broke down into floods of tears yesterday as she emotionally watched her 28-year-old other half win in the keirin – a triumph which meant he has equalled Sir Chris Hoy’s record-breaking Olympic medal winning spree.

Kenny had already won two golds in these Games and completed a hat-trick by winning the keirin after facing an anxious wait to discover if he had been disqualified for overtaking the derny bike prematurely.

Trott is engaged to Jason Kenny, now a six-time Olympic champion after he won three gold medals over six days of action at the Rio Velodrome.

Trott has twice won the omnium world title, each time in an Olympic year before going on to win Olympic gold as well.

She also set a new world record in the women’s team pursuit with Joanna Rowsell, Elinor Barker, Katie Archibald and Ciara Horne.

“If you can win the worlds with basic equipment, you can come here and do what Britain has done today and know the week we’ve had”, she added.

The two riders were handed a reprieve after lengthy deliberations, while Germany’s Joachim Eilers also avoided being banished after clearly edging ahead of the motorised bike.

“We’ve got a really strong team now”.

“Just to clarify, “what’s for tea?” is often I question [sic] asks me!”

“I was a little bit anxious then, but once it was re-run I knew the second false start didn’t even matter because you could tell it wasn’t Jason who might be in trouble”.

Diver Jack Laugher won his second medal of the Rio Olympics with silver in the three metres springboard. There was a first ever cycling medal for Malaysia, as Azizulhasni Awang took bronze.

Laura Trott gave Great Britain their fifth track cycling gold medal with a commanding performance.

“I think Venus and Serena [Williams] have won about four each”, corrected Murray. Britain did not qualify for the seventh, the women’s team sprint.

All Trott’s gold medals have been at the expense of Hammer, the American who must be sick of the sight of her rear wheel.

Beijing 2008: Team sprint (with Jamie Staff and Sir Chris Hoy). “He started showing me £10 engagement rings on a website and told me that when he proposed that’s what I was getting”, Trott said.
