Arsene Wenger: ‘Arsenal performed well against Leicester City’

Leicester City and Arsenal continue their search for a first win of the season after they drew 0-0 in Saturday’s clash at King Power Stadium in the defending Premier League champion Foxes’ home opener.

Leicester are on a 19 game winless run against Arsenal in the Premier League (D6 L13) and lost both games last season.

“Our strength is the same”.

“We’re not scared to spend money, but to buy in itself is not a quality, to buy good players is”, Wenger told journalists on Thursday. “We won’t change our mentality. We analyse everything then make the right signings”.

No doubt, the top of the table match, arguably, is the encounter between champions, Leicester City against Gunners, Arsenal.

Robert Huth returns to the centre of defence after being suspended last week, linking up with captain Wes Morgan at the heart of Leicester’s back-line, while Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy also start.

But Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who faced renewed criticism after last week’s defeat, has denied suggestions he is reluctant to spend the money of the club he has managed since 1996.

Leicester City and Arsenal both started their 2016-17 Premier League campaigns last week with high hopes.

They are without a win from their first two games – and fans chanted demanding Wenger open the club’s chequebook before the transfer deadline. We have been in the market a long time but if you look around in Europe, all my friends I call are all looking for centre-backs but they can not find them. “They kept a lot of possession but we created clear chances”, said Ranieri.

When asked whether, given last weekend’s loss, it was more important than ever to sign a central defender, he admitted it was “difficult to identify people, and to find them”.

Leicester surprisingly lost 2-1 to Hull City last week and Wenger said: “The challenge for them is to do well again and to show that their past year was not a one off”.

Arsenal were missing several first-team players against Liverpool and Wenger’s starting XI remains hard to predict.

That led to the inexperienced partnership of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding starting the 4-3 defeat, while Wenger has been linked with a move for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Nigerian forward Alex Iwobi, meanwhile, sustained a thigh injury. However, the defending champs of the league in Leicester City suffered arguably the worst result possible.

“Danny is very, very close to signing a new contract”, he added. “They are 70 percent, not 100 percent”.
