Ex-Lion Stephen Tulloch lands with Eagles

The Eagles reportedly tried to sign Tulloch 2 ½ weeks ago, but couldn’t come to an agreement. The coach was serving as the defensive coordinator in Tennessee when the team drafted the linebacker out of North Carolina State in the fourth round of the 2006 National Football League draft.

He signed a one-year deal on Sunday with the Eagles worth up to $3 million and $1.75 million guaranteed. He also contributed 107 tackles for the Lions last season, despite being just one year removed from a torn ACL. When I was in Detroit, we brought him up there. Walker had been playing as Philly’s second-team middle linebacker and impressed coaches in practice.

Schwartz was Tennessee’s defensive coordinator when the Titans drafted Tulloch out of N.C. State in the fourth round of the 2005 draft, and two years after getting the Lions’ head job in 2009, convinced Tulloch to follow him to Detroit.

The Lions released Tulloch in July, opting to move forward with Tahir Whitehead at middle linebacker.

Even if he doesn’t start though, Tulloch will certainly be the first linebacker off the bench and will be a great option for the Eagles to have.

Obviously, I was told back in February that the team kind of wanted to go in a younger direction, which is understandable, but we had some things to work out in between, between that. Second-year talent Jordan Hicks is now projected to start at the middle linebacker position. After Walker’s injury, the team was down to Najee Goode, Deontae Skinner and a couple of undrafted rookies at depth positions. In 2014, he played three games before tearing his ACL.
