Parents Ramana and P. Vijaya did not impose volleyball on Sindhu and allowed her to choose the sport she liked, which was badminton.
Sindhu, in her first Olympics, entered the pre-quarters with a grueling 72-minute win over Canada’s Michelle Li 21-19, 21-15, setting up a very tough match against the London Olympics silver medalist Yihan Wang of China.
Sindhu thus became the fourth Indian to win a silver at the Olympics after shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004, Athens) and Vijay Kumar (2012, London) and wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012, London).
RIO DE JANEIRO Carolina Marin overhauled a fearless Pusarla Sindhu in the women’s singles final on Friday to win Spain’s first badminton title and crush India’s hopes of a maiden gold medal at the Rio Olympics.
Flag-waving Spanish fans jumped up and down as twice world champion Marin pumped her fists and bellowed in triumph, having survived a huge scare. “Sindhu is one of the youngest women players who bagged a silver medal at Olympics”. Her opponent Carolina Marin, is current number one and Sindhu ranks 10th, but that tactical edge was not visible as both the players fought for every single point.
AIR correspondent reports, Sindhu could not win the Gold but had really worked hard, and that the Final was anybody’s game.
Sindhu, in fact, trailed 16-19 in the opening game before reeling off five straight points to clinch it. “Very well fought. Your accomplishment at #Rio2016 is historic & will be remembered for years”.
“Hyderabad would continue to be the hub of badminton in India and the two Academies set up by Gopi would be the major assembly-line of gifted talent in the days to come”, Lakshmi said.
Congratulations have poured in for Sindhu for winning the Silver medal. “The people of India rejoice with your family and you on the remarkable achievement”. Chandrababu said in a statement that Sindhu stood as an inspiration for scores of Indian youth.
In a message, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Sindhu had made the whole country proud.
With the feat, Sindhu has also become the fifth Indian woman to clinch a medal in Olympics history after Karnam Malleswari, Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal and Sakshi Malik.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi also congratulated Sindhu for her historical performance. A bronze medalist will get Rs 50 lakh.
