Typhoon Mindulle Disrupts Flights and Trains in Japan

The eleventh typhoon of this season is project to make landfall on Hokkaido later in the day, with the Japan Meteorological Agency warning of thunderstorms, mudslides, high waves and swollen rivers in Iwate prefecture and Hokkaido. Japan Airlines Co. canceled 145 domestic flights, affecting about 27,000 passengers, while ANA Holdings Inc. scrubbed 96 flights, according to statements from the airlines.

Typhoon Mindulle, located in the Pacific 170km west-north-west of Chichijima island at 9am local time on Sunday, was heading north toward the Japanese main island of Honshu with gusts up to 126 kmh, the agency said.

Even trains were affected with Odakyu services halted between Tokyo and Hakone, while the Yamagata Shinkansen stopped operating in a section between Fukushima and Shinjo. In nearby hot springs resort, 90 people were stranded due to damage to a road, said officials.
