Hinch the heroine as GB women’s win Olympic gold

Now it’s a question of who’ll come to play when it’s all on the line.

Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh married in 2013 and, when asked what it meant to win Olympic gold alongside her wife, 34-year-old Helen said: ‘It’s pretty special. Both have been ideal ambassadors of not just Germany but for the game of hockey on a whole! Some went even further than that.

Despite the one-sided nature of the final the GB coach, Danny Kerry, said he just had a feeling throughout that they would win it.

“I remember Helen making her debut for England hockey when she was a student with us back in 1999 and she really has enjoyed a fantastic career”. We have some tough characters taking them and we have probably the best goalkeeper in the world. “We all just keep looking at each other and going what happened, what on earth just happened?”

Hinch was on hand to make a string of fine saves as the Dutch threat grew, and eventually she was beaten by Kitty van Male and Paumen.

” Germany were the last team to defeat the Netherlands at the Olympics on their way to the 2004 title”.

Richardson-Walsh dusted herself down to score her team’s second goal.

Once you get to that stage, conventional wisdom would have you believe that a shootout is a lottery – but don’t believe a word of that says Hinch.

“It’s a dream come true to reach an Olympic final, something we have trained for and we have the experience of being in the final”.

However the World No1 levelled second into the second quarter after a lightning break which saw van Male drive past Hinch to her left before slashing a reverse stick strike from an angle into the roof of the net. I am constantly keeping my database up to date.

Helen Richardson-Walsh, who had missed her shootout attempt moments before, said: “As soon as it was a stroke I was really confident I’d go up and slot it home”. I am going to retire as an Olympic champion and I think it’s a good way to go out’.

“It helped that the Dutch had a shoot-out in their semi-final, so that gave me a chance to see what they do, but I basically give myself a game plan for each player and I execute that and thankfully it worked”.

The victory was a “great advert for hockey”, added Hinch, who was proved correct by the legions of new fans, celebrities, politicians and sports stars who heaped congratulations on the team on social media.

But what a flawless way for the married couple that form the backbone of this side to sign off their global careers – although Helen has yet to officially confirm hers.

Great Britain’s women are Olympic champions for the first time after Maddie Hinch and Hollie Webb’s penalty shootout heroics ended Holland’s dynasty in the Games in tonight’s (August 19) dramatic final.

At the London Olympics in 2012, where Britain were bronze medalists, she played with a metal plate in her face after having her jaw fractured.

His tactical nous has been key to their revival but away from the pitch the focus on fitness work and novel approach to building team culture – the players rave about Thinking Thursdays – has made all the difference.
