Sprint Introduces Free Calling, Texting to Canada, Mexico

Sprint Corporation S is the latest carrier to join the Canada-Mexico roaming trend with the launch of a new free add-on service named Open World, for its customers on domestic service plans. And while in Mexico, those customers have unlimited calling to the US and inside Mexico, as well as unlimited texting and data usage. On top of that, Sprint also offers a Global Roaming add-on for free, which allows them to send unlimited text messages and place calls at a flat rate of $0.20 per minute, along with free 2GB data to a number of countries, including Canada and Mexico.

Sprint’s Open World is a riposte to T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS)’s Mobile without Borders.

Customers will also get free calls and texts while traveling in Canada, Mexico and more than a dozen other Latin American countries, all without roaming charges.

Both carriers cover Mexico and Canada while roaming but Sprint extends its plan to Latin America also. If so, take a look at the new, free Sprint Open World smartphone plan add-on.

The companies are all reacting to AT&T’s move into Mexico. T, who earlier this year entered the Mexican telecom industry with the acquisition of Grupo Iusacell and Nextel de Mexico for around $4.4 billion.

Last month T-Mobile US unveiled its Mobile Without Borders offer, which allows its Simple Choice plan customers to use their existing bundles of voice minutes, SMS and data to, from and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. With more people coming online in the country, carriers are looking for ways to expand their services and win customers.

Finally, Sprint Open World offers free texting, $0.20 per minute calls, and $30 per GB data in Australia, Canary Islands (Spain), Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Palestinian Territories, Russia, San Marino (Italy), Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Vatican City, and Wales. By providing free or almost free offerings when traveling, carriers are trying to appeal to customers who are exhausted of paying massive roaming charges. The countries of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will be added to the program in the future, according to Sprint.
