‘Sausage Party’ beats ‘Pete’s Party’

In the United States, the weekend’s big victor was Sausage Party, the R-Rated Seth Rogan film taking $33.6 million domestically on a $19 million production cost. The low budget ($19 million) animated R-rated film about talking foodstuffs pulled down over $36 million and could have legs to continue for a few weeks yet.

Second place went to the new animated comedy Sausage Party. “‘Sausage Party’ again proves that studios with guts stand by their edgiest filmmakers through thick and thin”.

Suicide Squad topped all newcomers in its second weekend of release, taking in an estimated $43.8 million for another first-place finish.

At the top of the chart, Suicide Squad dropped 67.3% for an estimated $43.7 million, nearly spot on what we were expecting after its opening weekend seven days ago.

The villainous team-up took $58.7 million from 15,600 non-US cinemas in 62 territories, the worldwide haul totalling $465.4 million.

The cast also includes Jai Courtney (“Insurgent”), Jay Hernandez (“Takers”), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (“Thor: The Dark World”), Ike Barinholtz (“Neighbors”), Scott Eastwood (“Fury”), Cara Delevingne (“Paper Towns”), Adam Beach (“Cowboys & Aliens”), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. Fortunately though, “Pete’s Dragon” only cost $65 million to produce – unlike Disney’s other family film from a month ago.

Meanwhile, Disney’s remake of “Pete’s Dragon”, the 1977 kid’s classic, has performed poorly too.

Rounding out the top five are Jason Bourne and Bad Moms, with $13.6 and $11.4 million, respectively. It’s a pattern that was seen earlier this year with the superhero movie “Batman v Superman”, which is also based on DC Comics characters and was released by Warner Bros.

Meryl Streep’s shot at a 20th Oscar nomination (she’s like Michael Phelps when it comes to nabbing Oscar kudos), Florence Foster Jenkins, debuted in a little more than 1500 theaters to the tune of $6.58 million.

Both of those films were in their third weekend of release. Produced on a $19 million budget, it will have some ground to make up when it starts its global release.
