Labour Party members in Hartlepool have handed under-fire Jeremy Corbyn their “overwhelming support” as he gears up for a crunch leadership battle. He also said Corbyn “has already proved that he is unable to organize an effective team, and has failed to win the trust and respect of the British people”. “We can’t afford to spend another moment fighting each other”.
In August, Owen Smith gained a nominational vote by the Jewish Labour movement, receiving 92% while Corbyn received just 4%.
Katie Green, a chair of the campaign of Corbyn’s rival for party leadership, Owen Smith, said: “These kind of violent and deeply offensive remarks make a mockery of Jeremy’s ‘kinder, gentler politics.’ Jeremy should be condemning his comments”.
Mr Corbyn’s campaign team said he had secured the nominations of 285 Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs), against just 53 for Mr Smith.
Elsewhere in the debate, Mr Smith berated Mr Corbyn for his “ineffectual leadership” in the Shadow Cabinet and for failing to address Brexit at the first Prime Minister’s Questions after the European Union referendum.
The Labour leader has said he intends to address the “World Transformed” event, which is being organised by Momentum, the campaign group that is co-ordinating his leadership re-election bid.
“He has lost the confidence of more than 80% of Labour MPs in Parliament – and I am afraid we simply can not afford to go on like this”. However, preaching to the converted and appealing to the general public are two fundamentally different things.
Many Corbyn supporters will see this as stabbing him in the back.
Labour had campaigned for Britain to remain in the European Union (EU) but Corbyn – the extreme left-wing MP who was elected leader of the main Opposition party in a landslide victory previous year – was believed to be more inclined towards Brexit despite campaigning for remain.
And now a letter backing Mr Smith for the position has been signed by 1,000 party members, including 44 from Gwent.
However, the veteran left-winger maintains huge support from rank-and-file Labour members and is still expected to win the contest, which has five weeks to run.
Mr Smith drew jeers from some when he referred to “170 socialist MPs” who lack confidence in Mr Corbyn’s leadership. Ballot papers will be sent out starting Monday, with the result due to be announced September 24.

However, last month she said: “With Jeremy as leader the chances of a UK Labour Government in the near future are slim at best and non-existent at worst”.
