Arsene Wenger: ‘Top-class centre-backs are hard to come by’

The £850m already spent by Premier League teams this summer has coincided with the first season when the new £5.1bn generated from the sale of broadcast rights will be distributed among the top-flight outfits – and Wenger says English clubs are seeing valuations soar as a result.

“We need to continue being very unsafe going forward and accept the way we play”.

“The current PFA Player of the Year signs new terms after playing a starring role in City’s unforgettable Premier League title triumph last season – the latest stage of a remarkable journey for the 25-year-old Algerian in Leicester City colours”.

“We work very hard and I can not tell you much more”, he said. Last year, we won the league.

“I would like to reassure you that we are not afraid to spend the money we have and we are working very hard”, he continued.

Koscielny has not played since Euro 2016 and both his France team-mate Olivier Giroud and Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil are in the same boat.

One player Wenger failed to lure to the Emirates Stadium was Leicester forward Jamie Vardy, who rejected the overtures to sign a fresh deal with the champions.

“This is a big football match and I think there will be goals”.

“I was so sure (he would stay), it was only speculation with first Vardy and then Mahrez and we only lost (N’Golo) Kante”.

Albrighton caught Granit Xhaka dawdling and sent the ball skidding into Vardy’s path, but with Koscielny sliding in to close him down, the England man skewed his shot wide. We have been in the market a long time but if you look around in Europe, all my friends I call are all looking for centre-backs but they can not find them.

“It’s important to spend money but more important to spend it the right way. I am OK”, Pogba told the Manchester Evening News on Wednesday.

Wenger explained: “We are not scared to spend money but to buy in itself is not a quality – to buy good players is”.

“The challenge for them is to do well again and to show that their previous year was not a one off”, he said.

For all the memorable moments Leicester City created in their stunning run to the top of the table, they had a forgettable one last weekend at KC Stadium.
