“He was martyred while in hospital as a result of the same bombardment”, a local council rep says; Ali suffered internal bleeding and organ damage.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday that Ali Daqneesh (10), died on Saturday from wounds sustained in the same airstrike on a rebel-held neighbourhood in Aleppo.

His younger brother, five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, was pictured in the back of an ambulance after being pulled from the rubble, with an expression of incomprehension on his dust- and blood-caked face.

Abu Ali, the father of the 5-year-old boy whose picture recently became the symbol of the destruction wrought by the war in Syria, recalled the horrific moment when the missiles hit his home in Aleppo.

At least 45 civilians were killed in Aleppo and to the west of the city, and another 22 died in neighbouring Idlib province, reports said early this week.

Russian and Syrian warplanes have intensified their air strikes on the rebel-held east of the city since insurgents made an advance last month, in July, breaking an effective siege, said Reuters.

The Observatory said the death toll of an air raid on the northern village of Orem on Saturday rose to least 25 people including three children and four women.

Since the image’s release, the photo has reverberated around the globe, much like that of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, whose body washed ashore on a Turkish beach past year.

Omran, his siblings and parents were all plucked from the rubble wounded, but alive, following Wednesday’s bombing.

Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations envoy, has long called for a 48-hour halt in fighting each week to allow aid delivery and medical evacuations from both rebel-held eastern and government-controlled western Aleppo. “Children of Omran’s age in Syria have known nothing but the horror of this war waged by adults”, he said. People have started fighting more against the War in Syria.
