Turkey: 5 detained for trying to enter Israeli consulate

Police say the rocket caused no injuries or damage in the residential area where it landed.

“The current situation on the ground in Gaza is stable and calm has returned, but we don’t know the intentions of the (Israeli) occupation”, interior ministry spokesman Iyad al-Bozum said.

A spokesman for Hamas in Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri, said Israel “carries responsibility for the escalation in the Gaza Strip and this new aggression will not succeed” in weakening the movement.

A senior Israeli military official told the Haaretz newspaper that “dozens” of strikes on Sunday night had targeted Hamas “infrastructure”.

Yesterday afternoon, JOL reported that a rocket that was sacked from Gaza into Israel landed between 2 homes in Sderot.

Witnesses said Israeli aircraft struck civilian targets including a water tank in the area.

People in the Palestinian Gaza Strip said that up to 50 Israeli airstrikes took place in the territory on Sunday night after a rocket was sacked earlier in the day from the embattled strip, landing on the border settlement of Sderot in an open area and injuring no one.

Turkey on Monday condemned what it said were “disproportionate” Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, insisting that a recent reconciliation pact doesn’t preclude it from speaking out against the country’s actions.

The group has been known to fire rockets in the past as a challenge to Hamas, which has governed the besieged enclave since 2007.

On 2 July, Israeli air raids hit four sites in Gaza after a rocket struck a building in Sderot. There were no casualties in either incident.
