Georgian authorities say they have thwarted a “terrorist act” on a gas pipeline that supplies natural gas from Russian Federation to Armenia, RFE/FL reports.

The suspects prepared to carry out an explosion of an open section of the gas pipeline near the Saguramo village, some 20 kilometers from Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, teh State Security Service said.

On August 20th, the five suspects traveled to the forest along Zhinvali-Shatili highway to gather the explosives from the cache, reported the SSS.

While commenting on the alleged “terrorist act”, a senior lawmaker from the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Sesiashvili, disclosed the preliminary information showed this group was related neither to the Islamic State, nor to other terrorist groups.

All suspects were apprehended by the Counter Intelligence Department of SUS. I would like to thank all those who participated in that operation as managed to avoid a major tragedy. “Making such timely and effective decisions and actions is of utmost importance”, said the Prime Minister.
