Delta Air Lines announced it was grounding almost 300 flights Tuesday, a day after a computer outage hobbled the carrier’s communication and booking systems and forced it to cancel about 1,000 flights worldwide.

Chief Operating Officer Gil West says that the airline is seeing slowness in a system used to check in and board passengers and dispatch planes.

Although the airline was back online late on Monday, the outages were so widespread that it was forced to deal with the knock-on effects a day later.

Delta is investigating why some critical systems and network equipment didn’t switch over to its backup systems following the power loss, the carrier said in a statement.

Delta said Monday that it was looking into what caused the system outage.

Delta Air Lines delayed or canceled hundreds of flights Monday after its computer systems crashed, stranding thousands of people on a busy travel day.

Delta airlines employs 80,000 people worldwide with 335 destinations in 61 countries it services. Many of Delta’s passengers are stranded at airports and continue waiting for their flights. The company says it is offering vouchers and refunds for numerous people affected. No other customers lost power, he said.

On Monday, 66 Delta flights were canceled and 102 were delayed, FlightAware’s website shows.

According to the company’s website, tickets must be reissued by Friday.

Delta’s outage follows several high-profile computer problems faced by USA airlines in the past year.

The company said it would extend through Tuesday a waiver of fees normally collected when travelers change flights.

This incident comes just a few weeks after an outage at Southwest Airlines led to the cancellation of about 2,300 flights over four days.

The airline announced at 8:30 this morning that approximately 300 flights will be cancelled today “as it works to reset the operation and get crews, aircraft and other operational elements in place”. United Airlines and American Airlines both suffered outages past year — United has struggled with several meltdowns since combining technology systems with merger partner Continental Airlines.
