Tinsukia district in Upper Assam is considered to be the stronghold of the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (Ulfa-I).

The son of BJP leader Ratnaswer Moran and nephew of party lawmaker Bolin Chetia, Kuldeep was kidnapped from Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on August 1.

“I have become very weak and my health has also deteriorated”. Ratneswar is the Vice President of Tinsukia Zila Parishad and a close aide of Sadiya legislator Bolin Chetia. “I am afraid I might get killed in crossfire”, Kuldeep said in the clip. The outfit had demanded Rs 1 crore for the release of Moran and directed that the amount be collected from Chetia. The Assam Police suspected that he had been kept somewhere in Myanmar. “However, as the boy hails from Tinsukia, I have been regularly coordinating with police in Changlang district”, said Tinsukia SP MJ Mahanta. “I am a poor man and can not pay the amount. I can only request the kidnappers to release my son without any condition”, said Ratneswar Moran.

Meanwhile, Sonowal tonight appealed to the abductors to release him on humanitarian ground.

A day after his abduction Kuldeep’s father received a call from someone claiming to be from Ulfa-I.

Informing that anti-talk faction of ULFA has been targeting tea gardens and some industrial houses in the state to mobilise fund to give a fresh lease of life to its terror network in the state, security sources said that some of the tea garden managements have informed the security agencies and sought their help to resist ULFA (I)’s extortion demand.
