Then, just as councillors prepared to vote for whip and mayor, an ANC councillor collapsed and died…

Council is yet to vote for their new mayor or release the name of the deceased.

Herman Mashaba was voted mayor of Johannesburg after a long day of proceedings.

South Africa’s ruling ANC lost control of the economic hub of Johannesburg for the first time since the end of apartheid on Monday, after local government councillors elected an opposition candidate as mayor.

Mashaba says the DA aims to create an environment that empowers entrepreneurs.

In the vote for Chief Whip, the DA’s Kevin Wax received 146 votes, while the ANC’s Solomon Mogase received 123 votes.

Mashaba provoked controversy with comments about the ability of poor people to hold political leadership positions, bringing him into conflict with the EFF, whose policies are overtly pro-poor.

The Black Like Me founder defeated Parks Tau by 144 votes to 125‚ after an inaugural session that took place for almost 11 hours following the August 3 election.

“Dan Bovu … thinks our democracy is up for sale”, EFF’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said in a statement. “The citizens of Johannesburg voted for change and today the change had begun to take effect”, he said.
