Conor McGregor defeats Nate Diaz, wants third fight at 155 pounds

During his post-fight media scrum, Diaz said he wasn’t interested in anything but a third shootout with the UFC’s golden child. After the 25 minutes were done with the brutal stains of battle were etched all over their faces, blood etching their stoic faces.

“We’re definitely not doing this a third time right now”, White told FS1 after Saturday’s event (via MMA Fighting).

For once, it appears White will be a man of his word.

The 28-year-old Irishman must defend his UFC featherweight title against Jose Aldo to hold onto the crown, but is yet to determine his next move.

Following the fight, Jose Aldo, who was defeated by McGregor in 13 seconds in December past year in a featherweight bout, tweeted: “Where you at @TheNotoriousMMA?”. Dos Anjos was subsequently forced to withdraw from UFC 196 with a broken foot which allowed Diaz to slide in at the last second.

On August 20, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor reclaimed his throne at the top of the UFC as he defeats Nate Diaz after 5 rounds of action via majority decision in an instant classic. The UFC granted their meal ticket his wish and instead of causing a logjam at featherweight, they arranged an interim title bout between Aldo and Frankie Edgar.

McGregor is the reigning featherweight UFC champion and has of late become a polarizing figure in the sport thanks to his outspoken and confrontational attitude.

McGregor doggedly defended against Diaz’s attempts to tackle him and came back for a close victory by referee decision after the fifth round.

“All I know is its 1-1”, said McGregor in his post-fight interview inside the UFC octagon.

“I’ve got to sit down and see what piece of the pie they’re offering me now, and take it from there”.

“I dropped him in the third round but then he started loading up”.

The former Bellator champion also labelled McGregor vs Diaz 2 a “freak show”. He didn’t go out and get it like I wanted him to get it. The first two fights between McGregor and Diaz were contested at 170 pounds. McGregor, though, has right-of-first-refusal for a bout against Aldo. He said that their next bout should be at 155 pounds, in the UFC’s lightweight division, after he fought the bigger man and overcame.

While it’s very clear what led McGregor to victory in this fight – game planning, defensive wrestling and dynamic striking – it’s also important to look at where he came up short, especially in regards to Diaz.
