In the 68-member assembly, the Congress has a majority with 36 members.

The ruling Congress had already announced its support for the legislation. However, Leader of opposition T.S. Singh Dev has said, the party will see to it that the interests of Chattisgarh are not compromised by the framework of this Bill.

Commentators says GST will eliminate the scope of double taxation in certain sectors due to tax dispute on whether a particular transaction is for supply of goods or provision of service such as licensing of intellectual properties like patents and copyrights, software, e-commerce and leasing.

With the Congress in power, Himachal Pradesh is the second non-BJP state after Bihar to ratify the Bill that will pave way for a new indirect tax regime.

Just before the Constitutional Amendment Bill was introduced, the BJP staged a walkout from the assembly over the purported remarks of the Chief Minister against them.
