Singapore’s longest-serving president SR Nathan dies
When he was with NTUC’s Labour Research Unit in the 1960s, he handled negotiations between trade unions and employers at a time when labor unrest was widespread and pro-communist elements had infiltrated many unions. “Mr. Nathan’s life is an inspiration to us all”.

Mr Nathan is survived by his wife Urmila Nandi.
He was the sixth and longest-serving President of Singapore and served two terms from 1999 to 2011. “He rose from humble beginnings to become the sixth and longest-serving President of Singapore”, Dr.
Lim wrote on Facebook on Monday night, “To fight for the interests of our workers, NTUC and its affiliated unions has to do research and analyse our economic and employment situation so that it could put up a strong and credible argument against the employers”.
“I had the privilege of working with Nathan from 1996 to 1999 when I was the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence”, said Tan, adding that Nathan helped set up the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, now called the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. “LRU grew from strength to strength and transformed NTUC into what it is today”. My condolences to Mrs. Nathan and the family. “Words can not do justice to what you have done for our labour movement”, said the NTUC Secretary-General on Facebook.
The couple happened to see the former President of Singapore on his daily walk and took the opportunity to ask him to grace the photo. “You touched everyone with honest, brotherly care”. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Nathan and Mr. Nathan’s family during this time of mourning”.
SR Nathan had suffered a stroke on July 31 and was in hospital since then.
